Results of Volunteers' Efforts Seen Throughout County on Community Care Day (Sep 13, 2006)
A steady rain dampened T-shirts and work materials but not volunteers' enthusiasm at the 15th annual Community Care Day event, observed in Delaware County on Wednesday, Sept. 13. Approximately 130 employees of 17 local companies teamed up to perform day-long service work for area nonprofit agencies at 12 work sites — work that would have cost the agencies tens of thousands of dollars if their budgets were sufficient to purchase the services.
The results of volunteer efforts can be seen in freshly painted walls in day care centers, disability-centered housing, and youth camps; festive meal-tray favors for senior citizens and homebound residents who receive home-delivered meals; landscaping at health agencies and senior centers; vehicle maintenance and disaster supply inventory at the Red Cross; insulation and other renovations at the Free Store; and many other improvements at the work sites. Volunteers had the opportunity to see first-hand the work of several area agencies whose nonprofit work is vital to Delaware County.
Participating companies included Nationwide; American Showa; Buehler's; Delaware County Bank; Delaware Court Healthcare Center; Greif Inc.; Huntington National Bank; JCPenney; Liebert; Meijer; Merrill Lynch; Oberfield’s; OCLC; OhioHealth-Grady Memorial Hospital; Target; Whittman Hart; and Worthington Cylinders.
Volunteers assisted in projects at Delaware Speech & Hearing Center; Salvation Army - Greenwood Lake Camp; the Delaware Senior Nutrition Program (Council for Older Adults); Delaware Creative Housing; HelpLine; Liberty Community Center; Toddler Inn; the American Red Cross; the Arthritis Foundation; Senior Citizens Inc.; and the Free Store.
Lunches were provided by the Kroger Co., and bottled water was donated by Wal-Mart store 1990. After their tasks were completed, volunteers enjoyed gourmet pizzas and beverages, courtesy of Rudy Z, and participated in prize drawings for gift cards and packages donated by the Kroger Co., Macy's, the Brown Jug restaurant, JCPenney and Cameron Mitchell Restaurants. Major sponsors of the event in central Ohio were Bob Evans Farms and the Kroger Co.
