Record-Setting Campaign Total Unveiled at Annual Meeting (Mar 14, 2007)
A record-setting campaign total was unveiled as a new team of board volunteers took the helm of United Way of Delaware County on March 14 at the organization's 49th annual meeting. Nearly 100 local volunteers attended the annual meeting and awards luncheon at the Hamilton-Williams Campus Center at Ohio Wesleyan University.
A final campaign total of $3.03 million was unveiled by campaign co-chairs William Nolan, of Squire, Sanders & Dempsey, and Mel Meyers, of Bry-Air, who headed a campaign team of community and business leaders in the public and private sectors. The amount tops United Way's goal of $2.8 million and exceeds last year's campaign total by nearly 7 percent.
The total includes pledges from employees who work at local firms; pledges from Delaware County residents who work in other areas but designate their gifts to their home community; and corporate gifts.
Kathy Tatterson Kreuchauf, who is celebrating a ten-year anniversary as the organization’s president, reflected on the growth of United Way of Delaware County in the past decade and its transformation, in recent years, to a results-focused organization aligned with the community’s most pressing human service needs. As part of that process, community investment teams of trained volunteers recommend allocations to local human service programs and monitor results of programs and services in five “Impact” areas: improving the lives of children; enriching the lives of senior citizens; promoting sound physical and behavioral health; increasing access to affordable housing; and sustaining basic needs and emergency services.
Two longtime United Way volunteers were honored at the meeting for outstanding contributions to community service.
Jody Anderson-Schuette received the 13th annual Nancy Frankenberg Award, named in honor of the community activist whose accomplishments included founding the local United Way. Anderson-Schuette, an advertising specialties professional with Victory Postcards & Souvenirs, has given more than nine years of volunteer service to United Way. She is completing a second full term on the board of directors, including two terms as board secretary, has chaired the allocations committee and served on the marketing committee.
Amy Shore, a regional vice president at Nationwide Insurance, was honored with the Life Member Award for multiple volunteer contributions to United Way of Delaware County.
Four new trustees were elected during the formal business portion of the annual meeting. Newly elected to the board of trustees with terms ending in 2010 are Emma Bricker, from Ohio Wesleyan University; Nancy Bohman, of Bohman Consulting; Jay Wolf, of Delaware County Bank; and David Arango, from Nationwide.
Six board members who are retiring from the board after two terms were acknowledged for their service; they include Anderson-Scheutte and Shore, as well as Don Blackburn, retired from Delaware County Bank; Theresa Byrd of Ohio Wesleyan University; Marsha McDevitt-Stredney, from Ohio Community Computing Center; and Tom Vatsures, of Vatsures & Vatsures.
New officers include Walt Abood, of Verizon Wireless, who will serve the board as chair for the coming year; Steve Garlock, of OhioHealth – Grady Memorial Hospital, chair-elect; and Laura Frum, of Ohio Statewide Development Corp., who will serve as treasurer. William Nolan was recognized for his service as board president this year.
United Way officials also recognized five local "Pacesetter" companies who led the annual campaign with early, exemplary results from employee pledges and corporate contributions. Earning honors as "Pacesetters" were Delaware County Bank, Wal-mart store #1990, American Family Insurance, the Floyd Browne Group and JCPenney store #2801.
Five companies received awards for the highest levels of corporate giving; they included Greif Inc., Liebert Power and Cooling Business, Bry-Air Inc., V&P Hydraulic Products and PPG Industries. Also honored were five companies who tallied the highest per capita giving in their workplace campaigns: Greif Inc., Bry-Air Inc., V&P Hydraulic Products, Macy’s store #52 at Polaris Fashion Place, and Floyd Browne Group.
Employee campaign coordinators at six area companies were singled out for exemplary performance. Honored for their work in conducting workplace fundraising campaigns at their businesses were Julie Kemerer, Progressive Medical; Craig Riege and Aaron Portnoy, American Family Insurance; Denise Parker and John Sullivan, Rockwell Automation; Deb McKee, Buehler’s; Deb Holmes, JCPenney; and Kathy Cade, Lowe’s.
